From Farm to Table: Why I Started Choosing Healthier Food Closer to Home

I used to think eating healthy meant scouring the imported aisle or paying premium prices at a specialty grocery. It took a bit of scrolling on FarmyHub, a platform connecting local Filipino farmers and producers directly with buyers to realize that some of the most nutritious, most intentional food in the country was being made right here in Mindanao.

Two producers stopped me in my tracks.

The Meat You Actually Know

The first was CdeO Integrated Farm, based in Cagayan de Oro. I’ll be honest: I had never thought seriously about rabbit meat or quail as part of my family’s regular meals. But once I started reading, the case made itself.

Rabbit meat is lean, high in protein, and lower in cholesterol compared to pork and beef, it’s actually one of the meats nutritionists often recommend for families managing their weight or heart health. Quail meat is similarly light and nutrient-dense, and quail eggs are a powerhouse in a tiny shell: rich in vitamins B1, B2, and iron, and easier on the digestive system than chicken eggs for some people.

What CdeO Integrated Farm offers isn’t just novelty. It’s an alternative protein source that’s both healthier for your family and more humane in how it’s raised. They also carry native chicken meat and rabbit jerky, the kind of snack you can actually feel good about handing to your kids.

For me, knowing exactly where my protein comes from and how those animals were raised matters. It matters for my family’s health, and it matters for the kind of food culture I want to model for my children.

The Drink Aisle, Reimagined

The second discovery was Flavours of Bukidnon, and this one genuinely changed how I think about the beverages and snacks in our ref and pantry.

They carry probiotic drinks, dairy products, deli items, and wholesome snacks, all sourced and crafted with intention in Bukidnon. In a world where “healthy drink” usually means a foreign brand with a price tag that gives me pause, finding a locally made probiotic option felt like a small win.

Probiotic drinks support gut health, which is connected to everything from immunity to mood to how well your kids absorb nutrients. Bukidnon, known for its cool climate and clean agricultural land, is exactly the kind of place that produces dairy and fermented products worth trusting.

Their wholesome snack line is the kind of thing I’ve been looking for: something to put in the pantry that isn’t a foil pouch full of ingredients I can’t pronounce, but also something my family will actually eat.

Why This Matters Beyond the Grocery List

Here’s what I kept coming back to as I was learning about both of these producers: they’re small, local businesses doing things the right way, raising animals properly, fermenting drinks naturally, creating products with real ingredients, and they deserve our attention.

When we choose products like these, we’re not just making a healthier choice for our families. We’re helping keep these farms and producers viable. We’re keeping money in communities that need it. And we’re quietly building a food culture that rewards quality and transparency over convenience and mass production.

That feels like the kind of decision that fits who I’m trying to be as a mom.

Where to Find Them

Both CdeO Integrated Farm and Flavours of Bukidnon are available to browse through FarmyHub, which brings together local Filipino farmers and producers in one place. If you’ve been curious about swapping out conventional proteins or finding a local probiotic drink that doesn’t cost half your grocery budget, these are great places to start.

The healthier choice and the more supportive choice can be the same choice. I love when that happens.
