How one fitness coach is thriving amid the Coronavirus outbreak

On rare occasions, I like to feature key people from different industries. Especially those who are known experts in their field. Today is a topic that’s close to my heart. My website and social media account names are based on it. FITNESS.

Since the Coronavirus moved the fitness industry to a halt. With lockdowns, quarantines, and regulations. Gyms and workout facilities have been shutting down left and right. Like most “non-essential” businesses, only those who are strong enough to adapt will survive.

We are not going to talk about business. We are going to talk about the heart of the industry. Our coaches. The people who support us and teach us when we were novices, who motivates us when we need to. I’ll be interviewing Coach MJ Cuvin from Anytime Fitness, and how she adapts and thrive during this crisis.

Hi Coach, can you introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi everyone I’m MJ, Personal trainer of Anytime Fitness SM City Sucat. I’ve in the industry for almost 6yrs. Before AF Sucat I am a personal trainer and a senior personal trainer of Anytime Fitness Lipa for more than 2 years.

How is the fitness industry right now?

Before this pandemic, the fitness industry here in our country has been the fastest growing business not only here but also in some other countries. Like Anytime Fitness they have almost 145 clubs in the Philippines. Nakakalungkot that because of the current crisis we are forced to close the clubs temporarily and we are praying na makakabalik ulit kami and slowly makakabawi rin ang fitness industry.

What are you doing to cope?

This is a challenging situation. Sa amin talaga this is our passion and our life. Yung magstay ka sa bahay for more than 2 months and no work no pay eh napakahirap. Pero sa lahat ng nangyayari dapat maging positive pa rin ung views mo lalo na may mga clients and members na admiring you eversince. Kelangan mo ipakita na motivated ka kasi mostly gym goers na pumupunta sa gym because of emotional reasons.

Nawawala ang confidence because sa nangyayari sa buhay nila before. Need ko isipin at ipakita sa kanila na kahit ano nangyayari sa labas eh magkaron pa rin tayo ng positive results and walang excuse to achive your personal and health goals.

How do you stay in shape?

Before the day ends, gumagawa na ako ng sarili ko program. Although challenge sakin na wala akong ibang equipments sa bahay, only my 3 resistance bands.

What’s your usual food every day?

I do not limit my food intake naging strict lang sa food but the basic and healthy foods lang.

What are your plans for the future?

I want to continue my advocacy to spread the importance of having a strong and healthy immune system lalo na ngaun panahon ng crisis. Walang iba tayong shield to fight the virus.
