Last night, I was feeling the worst (again). Colds have been running down my nose non-stop, my body is aching, cough is worst at night, and I want to feel better ASAP. Anyone who’s reading this can probably relate because you’re also in search for quick relief. Thank goodness I keep a stash of the quick cold remedies that works for me.
Each product is hand-picked, tried, and tested by yours truly. But before that, let me share with you some bits of knowledge on having colds. Some mistake it for flu but they’re different!
It is best you SEE A DOCTOR if symptoms persists or worsens.
Colds vs Flu
I’ll leave the scientific details of colds vs flu to experts. But here’s a quick graphic guide to check if what you’re experiencing is cough, or flu. Mine usually starts with sneezing and a runny nose. Sometimes I even mistake it for my cat allergy (and blame our Konani lol). However, as days go by and anthistamines won’t work, I start to cough a lot and my body starts to ache. Yep. It’s colds alright.
6 Quick Cold Remedies
#6 Tolak Angin
Where to buy? 711, Mercury Drug, Watsons
I prefer taking Tolak Angin vs Lola Remedios because the former doesn’t have high glucose content and uses real honey. Lola Remedios is like a poor rip-off of the brand. Yes you’ll get surprised on your first time, because it’s like drinking sweetened Katinko. It’s also a stronger variant of the popular Pei Pa Koa Lozenges.
It gives instant relief because upon drinking, it warms up the insides of your body. It also helps me relax and sleep better at night. When you have colds, good sleep is a must!
#5 Manuka Honey
Where to buy? New Zealand Goods PH on Instagram
There are a lot of fake honey being sold everywhere so make sure you’re getting authentic manuka honey. Some are made out of white sugar etc and just honey flavored so it really won’t cure your cough.
Taking Manuka Honey is a yummy way to soothe and relieve cough. I get a teaspoon of honey and suck it like candy. Delicious really! Manuka Honey has natural anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties that helps with colds and even the flu.
I take the Cal-Mag-Zinc because I also need the Calcium and Magnesium for my Tourretes/Rheaumatoid Arthritis.
Zinc is a mineral that’s important to the body in many ways. Zinc keeps the immune system strong, helps heal wounds, and supports normal growth. Zinc has become a popular treatment for the common cold. Some studies have found that zinc lozenges may reduce the duration of cold, perhaps by as much as 50%, and may reduce the number of upper respiratory infections in children.
#3 Vitamin C
Where to buy? Drugstores
I prefer taking non-acidic vitamin C so it doesn’t upset my stomach. Too much can also lead to frequent urination and a soft bowel so be careful! We all know and love Vitamin C and honestly, it’s a supplement we should take everyday because our bodies doesn’t naturally produce it; unlike other vitamins.
How much should you take? I usually take 500mg in the morning and 500mg at night!
#2 Kamillosan Spray
Where to buy? Mercury Drug, Watsons, Rose Pharmacy
I prefer the Kamillosan Throat Spray over lozenges because it works as quick as you spray it. It also consists of natural herbs to sooth sore throat.
#1 Zenutrients All is Well Oil
Where to buy? Zen Nutrients Kiosk, BeautyMNL, SM Beauty
Last but not the least, the oil that feels like a warm hug. Made from coconut oil, with menthol and eucalyptus. They seem to perfectly concocted it to be not so spicy but still comforting. I also use this as an inhalant. I squeeze a bit on my palms, rub and breathe.
